ImageMr. Sikes serves as the first director of orchestra at Texas A&M University and

Associate Director of Bands.  His career has taken him through every level of instrumental music working with beginners through university students. 

 

Prior to his most recent appointments, he was adjunct professor of music education at the University of Houston where he taught string methods and observed student teachers.  He also was the first orchestra director at Morton Ranch High School in Katy, Texas.  Under his leadership, the orchestra was recognized from the very first year as an outstanding musical organization, winning top awards at festivals and contests throughout the state.  Before Mr. Sikes began conducting orchestras, he was a band director for 10 years.  He began his career as a junior high band director at O.L. Slaton Jr. High in Lubbock then moved to direct the Lee Freshman Band in Midland.  After Midland, Mr. Sikes moved to Waco and was the assistant band director and graduate student at Baylor.  His last band position was as the associate director of bands at Texas A&M where he directed the University Concert Band (now the Symphonic Winds), the volleyball and basketball bands, and was assistant director of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Band.  Throughout his career, Mr. Sikes’ groups have been successful, increasing in both numbers and quality and recognized as outstanding groups by peers throughout the state.  

Mr. Sikes is an active musician and is in demand as judge and clinician for both bands and orchestras.  In addition to his conducting duties, he has also served on the state board of directors for the Texas Music Educators Association.  He has presented workshops and clinics at the University of Houston, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the National Association for Music Education (MENC)

 

Mr. Sikes earned his Bachelor of Music from Texas Tech University, his Master of Music from Baylor University and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Houston.  He has a wonderful wife, Kristi, who is a school councilor in Navasota ISD.
